El número de organizaciones que adoptan dicho estándar se ha venido incrementando en el mundo y en Colombia, así como las investigaciones en el tema. A pesar del mayor número de estudios sobre la ISO 14001, son pocos los referentes a América Latina; incluso entre éstos, son escasos los estudios de tipo cuantitativo acerca de efectos económicos de la certificación. Para aportar en esa reflexión, el presente capítulo tiene por objetivo determinar si tener certificación ISO 14001 tiene incidencia, o no, en la valorización de las empresas. Con una metodología cuantitativa, se analizó el ROE y la capitalización bursátil de emisores certificados y no certificados con ISO 14001, de la Bolsa de Valores de Colombia. Los resultados sugieren que la incidencia de la certificación ISO 14001 en la valorización de las empresas es débil, y el desempeño financiero entre empresas certificadas y no certificadas no difiere significativamente.The ISO 14001 standard is proposed as a tool for environmental management within companies. The number of organizations adopting this standard has been increasing both globally and in Colombia, as has research on the subject. Despite the greater number of studies on ISO 14001, there are few references to Latin America; among those that do exist, quantitative studies on the economic effects of the certification are scarce.
