Retos del sector textil colombiano ante la entrada de productos de la China y la devaluación de la moneda (2014-2019)

Abstract

This article analyzes the effects that the entry of products from China and the devaluation of the currency have caused in the Colombian textile sector in the period between 2014 and 2019. For this, three specific objectives are proposed: the first is based on describing the Colombian textile sector and its statistics in order to have information on the current situation, the second presents the sector's international trade variables (imports and exports) in order to obtain information about the trade balance, and the third consists of identifying the positive effects and negative effects of imports of Chinese textile products and the devaluation of the currency in the Colombian economy. Among the main results it is possible to show that the sector's exports are lower than imports, thus generating a deficit result in the trade balance. On the other hand, imports of Chinese products have a negative effect on the Colombian textile union because they enter the country with lower prices, affecting the national production and economy. Finally, by looking at the effects of currency devaluation, which can be positive and / or negative. The positives materialize in the competitiveness of exports, and the negatives in the increase in the cost of imported inputs.
